It depends. If you are hired as a full-time remote employee in your home country there’s a good chance you will receive medical coverage.
For instance, the company that I’m working remotely for now (based in Dallas, Texas) pays 100% for my health insurance. I have a basic plan. If you want a more premium insurance plan that is outside of the company’s coverage, the remaining amount is deducted from your paycheck.
In this case, you can see that the company covers most of your medical coverage.
I would try to stay clear of companies that don’t offer to cover at least 80% of basic health insurance costs, especially if they have more than ten employees. This shows that the company does not prioritize the health of its employees.
On the other hand, if you are hired as a full-time employee by a company outside of your home country (i.e. as a full-time contractor), it’s rare that the company will cover health insurance costs and medical expenses.
However, there are a few remote companies that do. One is Buffer. You can see at the bottom of their job page that they offer health insurance for all of their team members, international or US.
If the company you’re interviewing with does not offer health coverage and is not based in your home country, try to negotiate for slightly higher pay to cover medical expenses.
For instance, if they open with a $50K offer, say you want $60K in order to cover medical costs. When you frame your request like this, it’s hard for them to say no. Put them on the spot, in a respectable way of course. After all, they should care about the health of their employees.
