This was a question asked by a member of the free remote job course. Below is my answer!
I’m a housing finance product manager from China, 30 years old, with 6 yrs experience in commercial banking and a dream to be a freelancer. It’s not easy to find suitable remote work for me, which has been worried me for a long time. As known, most remote positions are open for ITs and it’s becoming more prominent in China.
I’m not an excellent coder. Even though I spent a lot of time in python and machine learning, it seems too late to obtain the skills to become an authority. What’s more, my own work has no relation to remote work and takes up a lot of my time.
Appreciate if you can give me some suggestions.
What follows is the advice I gave him.
I took some time to think about your situation.
My course does not help people find freelance work. It focuses on helping people find full-time remote jobs. However, there are definitely remote freelance opportunities for product managers. You don’t need to learn how to code. In fact, I see a lot of openings for product managers at remote companies.
To get freelance opportunities, I recommend reaching out to companies in China that are hiring product managers. Just by looking at AngelList I found 19 companies that are looking for product managers.
I recommend sending a short note to these companies, saying that you are happy to help them manage their products until they find someone to hire full-time. Before writing your message, look at their website. Then, in your message, give them three ideas in bullet point form about how you would help improve their products.
You can do this type of freelance work remotely. You can also start reaching out to remote companies throughout the world that are looking to hire product managers.
On AngelList, there are 239 companies who are interested in working with product managers based in China.
Have you tried contacting companies through AngelList yet? I show you how to do it in the remote job course.
I hope this helps!
