During my junior and senior year in college, I helped the university’s property management team maintain on-campus housing and university medical facilities. The experience I had working with this team of unique individuals was one of the highlights of my time at the University of Pittsburgh.

During my final semester at the University of Pittsburgh, I was hired as a writing intern by Dr. Joel Fishman, assistant director for lawyer services at Duquesne University. I was responsible for researching Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justices and writing short biographies for a new edition of Dr. Fishman’s publication.

My time at the LRDC taught me how to communicate effectively with fellow workers in an office space. My co-workers were incredibly organized and perfected the art of creating a healthy and pleasant work environment. Diligence and kindness were contagious. I worked at the LRDC during the latter half of my sophomore year.

This job gave me a new appreciation for plant life.  I learned how to care for anything with roots   During the winter, I assisted customers with Christmas trees and, during the summer, I helped customers find the plants to improve the look of their yard and yield of their garden.

This was my second job working in the food/restaurant industry.  This time, I was on the other side of the swinging door.  I served split-pea soup, chicken a la king and peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches to the friendly senior citizens in the retirement home’s dining room.  Working as a server for the friendly old folks was my last tour of duty in the food business.

 

Piccolina’s Italian RestaurantDishwasher • October 2005 – February 2006

My first official job – washing pots and dishes.  I can’t say that it inspired me to make a life for myself in the kitchen, but it offered a steady paycheck.  This was the first time I was nearly guaranteed to get paid for my work.  I was used to being stood up by my lawn service customers.  My job as a dishwasher made me appreciate payment in the form of a paycheck with tax deductions and perforated folds.
