Title: Brawl in Cell Block 99
Genre: Action Drama
Description: A man battles his way into the underground of maximum security prison to kill someone in order to save his wife.
The trailer does not do this movie justice. It makes the movie seem like another jail-gang movie but it’s nothing of the sort. It’s really a movie about something much more compelling: the strongest man alive. Jails, gangs, and drug lords just happen to be part of his story.
Bradley (Vince Vaughn) isn’t just physically strong. He’s emotionally strong. He’s a blue collar worker and recovering alcoholic who’s forgiving and selfless. This is shown through him immediately forgiving his wife for cheating on him, returning to a dark career to provide for her (drug running), and sacrificing his freedom and life — without hesitation — to save her.
This is the dramatic part of the story. The action part of the story involves Bradley ravaging and killing people with nothing but his fists and feet. He gouges eyeballs, detaches forearms from biceps, detaches calves from thighs, and stomps people’s faces into the floor. At one point he even severs someone’s head with his foot.
The best part of all? He’s not evil. He’s not doing this for sport. He’s doing it for love. And this makes you smile and cringe at the same time. It’s a beautiful twist of emotional reactions.
Lesson: Sacrifice yourself for the people you love. And, as Teddy Roosevelt said, “If you’re going through hell, keep going.”
